Grounding

Grounding – why is this good for us?

I read somewhere recently that we can never have too much grounding and I’d agree with that wholeheartedly.

I’ve had an on and off love affair with grounding for the past 30 years (or rather for all of my life) but consciously for the past 30 years.  I worked with many teachers and healers “on my grounding”, read about it and thought I knew all there was to know about it.  At a certain age I believed I was grounded!  However, it was only about 7 or 8 years ago I had a physical, very visceral, experience of landing in my body and of the joy and pleasure and expansion that it brought me.  I realised then that up until that point I’d really no idea what being grounded meant – it was all intellectual knowledge that I hadn’t quite put into practice yet!

What is it that helps us to ground?  In my experience, safety is a big factor.  Feeling safe in our bodies and on the planet.  We can’t control outside circumstances like partners and loved ones being around for ever, homes come and go, jobs come and go.  The most stable relationship and contact we can have is with ourselves.

Grounding is one of things that helps us to presence ourselves here in our bodies, on the planet.  Every time I receive a healing and drop into my body a little more, or let go of a limiting belief or an image, I reclaim little pieces of myself and I celebrate each time that happens – it means I’m moving further away from being closed and contracted and opening more and more to being fully present and engaged with life.  I have more access to who I am.

Some of my clients tell me after a healing they have an experience of dropping into their body.  It can be a very physical experience – like landing after a big jump – and a little disconcerting when you finally feel your feet for probably the first time in your life.

The tools to help us integrate grounding into our life are quite obvious things:  being in nature, walking on the sand or walking on grass, feeling our feet, dancing or simply just tuning into our body and feeling the pleasure at being here run through our bodies.  And of course there are many meditation techniques and healing modalities that can support us on our journey to presencing ourselves fully in our own lives.
